Ah, the summer – the time when we embrace lighter clothing, soak up the rays of the sun, swim, and enjoy seasonal fruits and vegetables. Nothing lasts forever and were about to say goodbye to this lovely season. We’re slowly approaching another season, so it’s time to prepare ourselves for fall. The change of season often triggers seasonal depression so it is up to us to take proper steps to ensure we stay well during this transition.

With the change of seasons arrives a change of diet. Our goal should be to nourish our body from the inside, which is especially important during the colder months. Soups and broths made of seasonal veggies are your go-to meals this season. Pair it up with lean sources of protein and healthy fats, and your health will strive. Meal prep delivery is also a healthier option once seasonal snack cravings strike.

You should also include some immune-boosting nutrients in your fall diet. People often reduce the amount of exercise during the summer months so fall is the perfect time to reshape your fitness goals. If you are one of those people who claim that it is too hot to exercise in July or August, now’s the time to reshape your fitness goals. Our natural response to colder weather is to remain inside where it is warm and cozy.

Instead, you should find ways to move more and fight seasonal inactivity. Find a group class you’ll love or reactivate your gym membership. If you hate working out when it is too dark, try working out in the morning when there’s more natural light. Either way, exercise will increase your metabolism which usually slows down during the colder months, and improve your mood and motivation.

Meditation, relaxation, and health care are just some of the things that will ensure you feel great with the change of seasons. In order to properly take care of your wellbeing, create a wellness nook within your home. Think in terms of creating a space that has a calming effect on your mind and body. You can soothe your mind with incense, aromatherapy, and scented candles and ease your body with a massage.

Seasonal affective disorder also known as SAD is a real thing and you might succumb to it. That is if you don’t have a proper strategy to send it flying somewhere far, far away. Firstly, include some vitamin D and try to get as much natural light as you can. Use the weekend mornings to spend time outside while there’s plenty of sunshine. Socialize as much as you can. Make a fall/winter goals list and try to tick as much as you can off it until Spring.

Pick up a new hobby and dedicate some time to it every week. Embrace new forms of self-care you’ve never tried before. Say “yes” whenever you are inclined to “say” no and just take care of yourself more. Don’t let toxic people back into your life just because they are too bored on their own and need a warm place to chill. Prioritize yourself over everything else and you won’t experience fall blues.

Maybe you’ve been too busy during the summer so you forgot about your semi-annual health checkups. If any of these is long overdue, now’s the time to schedule the appointments. GP, optometrist, and dentist appointments are a priority. Get your flu shot and boost the vitamin intake and you are good to go. 

September is the time to reset our rituals and embrace new ways of taking care of our wellbeing. Embrace the new season by preparing your home first. Clean everything, add some incense, and throw out the clutter. This will be the perfect start for other wellness rituals. Also, don’t forget to moisturize daily and mind your water intake.  

Also, try to ditch mindless social media scrolling and instead go for a walk or a hike. Days are becoming shorter so use this time to soak up some vitamin D while we still have it in abundance. Get outside and simply enjoy the amazing fall colors.
