German Apple Kuchen: A Recipe Of Delight

A lot of people don’t know this, but I spent a few of my high school summers in Germany with my aunt and cousins. I was learning German at school and my aunt was married to a German man so it made sense for me to spend a few weeks with them. One of my lasting food memories from those trips was my aunt’s homemade apple cake. This was an apple cake unlike any other I’ve come across since. The cake was a standard soft and light sponge with what I would describe as a crunchy crumble topping.

You can imagine how intrigued I was when I came across a recipe for German Apple Kuchen on the cook.me website! It ticked all the boxes for what I remember about my aunt’s apple cake including a cinnamon shortbread crumb topping!

I couldn’t wait to try it! Thankfully, I had all the ingredients listed in the cook.me recipe. I followed the recipe exactly to make the sponge base which I lined with apple slices and topped off with that crumble topping. Can you imagine how excited I was when I placed the cake in the oven for 40 minutes until I was left with a golden brown crumble soft sweet apples?

Once the recipe was cool enough, I cut a large slice and tried it. What can I say? It was like I had been transported to my aunt’s kitchen in Bonn. I love this recipe. It is the closest thing I have found to the Apple Kuchen of my memories! Cook.me have made the cooking process so easy from the simple step by step instructions with clear beautifully styled photographs. Check it out – you won’t be sorry!
