Illusions: Misinterpretation Of Reality!
We often hear people say that life is an illusion. Well, some illusions do baffle you and make you doubt reality. The distortion of reality during perception is called illusion. The most common illusions are visual in nature.
Some common Illusions:
1. BLUE vs GREEN ILLUSION
The blue and green color rectangles are of the same color but appear different.
2. MULLER LYER ILLUSION
This is an optical illusion where the second line appears to be longer than the first one but in reality or of the same length. The lines are perceived differently as the second line has arrow tails making it appear longer.
3. FLOATING STAR ILLUSION
Though the star in the image is stationary after looking at it for a minute appears to be rotating clockwise. It is created by artist Joseph Hautman. The carefully placed blue lines create the perception of movement.
4. HERMANN GRID
In this illusion, our eyes perceive a gray spot at all the points where the white lines intersect but if you look closely at one of the intersections the spot seems to have disappeared.
5. THE ROTATING SNAKES ILLUSION
This is a spectacular illusion because the circles appear to be rotating but are in fact stationary. If you stare at a circle the movement seems to slow down or stop.
6. HERING ILLUSION
The two red lines seem to be bowed outwards but are perfectly straight and parallel. Created by Ewald Hering, a German physiologist who believed that the distortion was derived from the mind overestimating the angles at the points of intersection.
7. ROTATING SQUARES
If you look at the image for a few seconds you will see the squares in the periphery begin to rotate.
8. SIMULTANEOUS CONTRAST ILLUSION
In this image, the horizontal bar in the middle is of one single color but because of the changing color of the background, the color of the bar seems to change.
9. THE RABBIT DUCK HEAD
This is an ambiguous illustration. The duck’s beak becomes the rabbit’s ears and the eye is drawn in such a way that it fits for both the animals.
