Simple Tips To Make Your Home Healthy And Safe

We spend most of our lives inside our homes, but what we don’t realize is that there’s a huge connection between our housing conditions and our physical health. Substandard housing conditions such as dirty carpets, piles of clutter, poor ventilation, and water leaks can lead to an increase in mold, mites, or other allergens that are related to poor health. Your home needs to make you feel safe and protected, so you need to do your utmost in order to reduce the chances of health hazards that can have serious consequences for you and your family. Here are some simple tips to help you ensure that your home is clean, safe, and healthy at all times.

Let the Fresh Air In

We cannot emphasize enough the importance of fresh air in your home. Studies have proven that indoor air is typically even more polluted than outdoor air. Therefore, open your windows and doors whenever you can in order to get rid of stale air and let fresh air in your home. Fresh air has so many benefits for your health including better concentration, improved blood pressure, stronger immune system, and higher serotonin levels, and therefore better mood. Having fresh air in home means there are higher levels of oxygen which improves your overall health, so open up those windows and let the fresh air in!

Invest in an Air Purifier or Get Air Purifying Plants

As we mentioned before, the air within our homes tends to be even more polluted than the outdoor air. Therefore, you should invest in a quality air purifier that will clean the air in your home and get rid of all those pollutants, allergens, and toxins. If you want, you can also get a few air purifying plants that will effectively remove all the harmful toxins from your home. House plants such as Aloe Vera, Peace Lilly, English Ivy,  Snake Plant, and Chrysanthemum will not only give your home a healthy breath of fresh air, but they will also look pretty and reduce your stress levels.

Always Keep Your Shoes at the Door

If you want to have a clean and healthier home do not wear shoes past your entryway. Politely ask your guests to always take their shoes off when they enter your home. The bottoms of our shoes carry all kinds of chemicals, dirt, and bacteria from the outside and we don’t want them inside our home. Therefore, always have a doormat by the front door, so that household members and guests can wipe off their shoes before they enter home. Get a rack to store the shoes and keep them organized in your entryway. It’s a good idea also to keep a basket of slippers for your guests to wear while they visit your home.

Wash Dishes Immediately After Use

Washing the dishes instantly after each meal is one of the best ways to always keep your home clean. Whether you’re hand washing the dishes or you’re using a dishwasher, get in the habit of cleaning them immediately after you use them. A kitchen full of unwashed dishes gives plenty of room for the infestation of germs, so keep your kitchen clean and tidy at all times and you will have a safe environment for cooking.

Declutter at Least Once a Month

Some things in your home pile up naturally, like mail, empty food containers, magazines, boxes, or even unmatched socks. So, spend a couple of hours at least once a month to go through all of this stuff and get rid of things that are absolutely unnecessary and things that don’t bring you joy. Decluttering can be therapeutic, so get rid of the things you don’t use or need  – you can either throw them away, recycle them, or donate them. Keeping your living space clutter-free will definitely make you feel happier and more in control.

Clean Your Carpets Properly

Clean your carpets properly to increase their lifespan and make your home healthier. Regular vacuuming is not enough, so deep cleanse at least once or twice a year are required. When it comes to deep cleaning of carpets, there are a few ways to do this. You can rent a steam cleaning machine, deep clean the carpet yourself by using baking soda or dish soap, or you can hire professional cleaning services which can get it done quickly and efficiently.

Minimise Mold

Mold is extremely common in houses and buildings. Mold grows in places with a lot of moisture like around leaks in roofs, windows, pipes, behind walls, but it can also grow on paper products, cardboard, wood products, carpets, wallpapers, and upholstery. However, mold has a huge effect on your health and exposure to moldy environments can make you sick, especially if you have asthma or allergies. That’s why you need to make sure that your home is free of mold by opening the windows every day, cleaning the carpets regularly,  cleaning the clutter, checking for leaks, and using a dehumidifier.

Use Natural Cleaning Products

Always choose natural cleaning products because they’re healthier for you and your family, but also for the environment. Many cleaning products nowadays contain harmful ingredients and harsh chemicals, so try using more natural or homemade products for your home. You can also use baking soda and vinegar – this natural cleaning combo is excellent for dissolving stains, absorbing odors, disinfecting surfaces, and leaving spaces clean and shiny.
