Relaxing Activities for Children

Relaxing is difficult at even the best of times when you are a child. Growing up is never easy, and children are faced with different challenges continuously, just like adults. Due to this, it can be hard for them to wind down, even if it is just for fun.

Anything from a very exciting day to extreme anxiety can put your child on edge, which is why creating time to engage that parasympathetic nervous system is crucial to a night of good sleep and wellbeing.

This piece has been created to discuss some ideas of how you can help your child to relax through calming activities. Read on to find out more.

Create with Playdough

Playdough is one of those favorite past times that we can pass down to our children. It is a wholesome activity that engages the brain in helpful ways, does not require a screen, and can provide relaxing fun for hours. It is also worthwhile knowing that this is a particularly low-cost activity, as you can make playdough yourself with some simple ingredients.

  1. Flour
  2. Cream of tartar – for softening
  3. Water
  4. Oil
  5. Food coloring – for fun
  6. Salt

Most of these can be found in your pantry. Then, just follow a simple recipe to create your playdough. This could also be a relaxing activity in itself to do with children if you can supervise them.

Storytime is another great option for an activity that children can participate in to relax and unwind. There is a good reason why bedtime stories are popular.

Even when it is not bedtime, children can benefit from having a story read to them if they are unable to read it themselves. However, if they can read, you can encourage reading time if you are not able to join in. Reading is an excellent way to unwind, especially if the story is not too exciting.

Listening to Music

Listening to music can be beneficial to so many people, and children are not an exception. They can either listen to their favorite childhood classics, or you can put on some suitable music that you enjoy and see what they think. Children grow up with their parent’s music tastes, so you can use that to bond with them while they take some time to chill out. If this sounds like something you would enjoy doing with a child, along with offering a supportive home, then head over to for more information.

Stretching and moving your body slowly but purposely is an excellent way to relax the body and mind. Why not try a session with your child or create your own? There are many you can find on YouTube that can help you all slow down for the day and encourage a healthy habit.
These can be done any time of day too.

These are just a few simple activities you can take part in with your children to quiet their minds and bodies.
