All You Need To Know About Entomophagy – The Practice Of Eating Insects

Wouldn’t you be infuriated if you went to a 5-star restaurant, order soup for starters and once it was served, you found a fly in it? What a disappointment that would be! There are another set of people who would be disappointed too. Not because they found one fly in the soup, but because they expected more than one in it.

And no, this isn’t one of those bizarre ‘what if?’ situations. Billions of people over the years have included edible insects in their diet. While a majority of individuals haven’t warmed up to the idea of eating things they’re scared of, more and more people are resorting to this practice these days.

Entomophagy – Weird Practice

It is a practice relating to consumption of insects as food. Believe it or not, we all ingest insects unintentionally. From packed fruits to beer, a lot of the things we consume contain small amounts of insects in them. And there’s nothing to worry about because they are rich in proteins, fats, minerals and vitamins. Ants, bees, caterpillars are the most commonly eaten insects.

Rentokil, a pest control company that provides its services in countries like India, Singapore, Australia and many others, introduced a restaurant exclusively for parasites. This restaurant was named ‘Pestaurant’. They started this Restaurant to encourage entomophagy. The year 2013 saw the first restaurant for edible insects and people in huge numbers from all around visited this place. Everyone was curious as to how an insect would taste. The dishes that were served included plainly roasted locusts, curry crickets and buffalo worms. Their website also provides recipes that have these edible insects as the major ingredient.
