Romantic movies make all of us believe that the person of our dreams is waiting around the corner for us. Romantic movies awaken our hearts and make us believe in all those lovey-dovey feelings. These are the movies that make us sad and we weep while dreaming about our significant other and munching on the popcorn. 

These movies make us believe that love is real, even after we have been on all those stupid, boring dates. These are the movies that bring out the hopeless romantic in us, no matter how surfeited we are feeling when we watch them.

1. The Notebook (2004)

This all time romantic movie directed by Nick Cassavetes and featuring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams is based on the novel The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks. In the movie, a poor country boy falls in love with a rich city girl and writes 365 letters to her when they get separated. This movie is surely gonna make you wrench through your guts.

2. La La Land (2016)

This musical romantic-comedy drama is directed by Damien Chazelle and stars charming Ryan Gosling and gorgeous Emma Stones. Their characters in the movie have one thing in common: achieving their dreams. They meet and fall in love while pursuing their dreams but this movie doesn’t end like typical rom-coms.It is surely gonna make your inner hopeless romantic emotional. So grab a tissue box before heading to watch it.

3. To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018)

This movie is part of a trilogy and features Lara Jean Covey played by Lana Condor and Peter Kevinsky played by Noah Centino. Lara writes letters to all of her crushes which are meant just to be kept by her until her sister sends these letters to all her crushes and her love life goes out of control. This is a sweet little love story, absolutely heartwarming to watch.

4. Call Me By Your Name (2017)

This movie based on the novel of the same name by André Aciman, features a seventeen years old boy Elio who falls in love with a much older man who is a research analyst hired by his father. Love blossoms between them during the summer of the 1980s in Italy. This movie is intense, emotional and is a must watch and surely does complete justice to Aciman’s beautiful writings.

5. Me Before You (2016)

I Before You is another movie based on the novel of the same title by Jojo Moyes. Directed by Thea Sharrock it starrs Emilia Clarke and Sam Clafin portraying the story of Louisa Clark who is for livelihood works for a paralyzed man, Will Traynor, as a caretaker. This movie features an emotional journey between two people from strangers to soulmates.

6. Before Sunrise (1995)

Before Sunrise is the first part of the Before trilogy, released in 1995 and directed by Richard Linklater. It showcases Jesse meeting Celine when they are on the Eurail train and then de-boarding in Vienna and spending the night together. The budding relationship between the two characters make the film completely fascinating and captivating.

7. Five Feet Apart (2019)

This movie features Stella (Haley Lu Richardson) who is seventeen years old and suffers from Cystic fibrosis. She meets Will ( Cole Sprouse) at the hospital who is suffering from the same disease. Although the duo clicks gradually and falls in love, they have to be 6 feet apart from each other to avoid further infection. This movie is beautiful, hopeful and totally gut wrenching. A must watch movie if you are a hopeless romantic.

Leonardo DiCaprio starring in this movie directed by Baz Luhrmann showcases a millionaire throwing parties every night, hoping to meet the girl of his dreams whom he saw years ago. Another book-to-movie adaptation, this movie is based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel of the same name.

9. Eternal Sunshine Of A Spotless Mind (2004)

This film follows a separated couple who have forgotten about each other and have no memory of each other in their mind. They meet on a train and start dating post their meet. Written in reverse by supremely talented Charlie Kaufman, this movie is perfectly directed with strong acting and is an absolute emotional ride.

This story revolves around Jamie Sullivan and Landon Carter. After Landon gets into trouble one day, he is assigned community service and is forced to take part in the spring play where he meets Jamie and falls in love with her. Hazel and Augustus, who are suffering from cancer meet at a cancer support group. They two bond over their hobbies and decide to swap each other’s novel. Then they decide to meet Hazel’s favourite author and embark on a journey to Amsterdam. During their journey, they fall in love and have their own ups and downs.The Fault In Our Stars is a classic, and definitely one of the best romantic movies ever which will have you overwhelmed and weeping at the end.

A British bookseller falls in love with a high-class American actress. They face a lot of trouble and their relationship is put at stake because of their huge societal difference. This movie is beautifully portrayed in which Julia Roberts has done an excellent job. It beautifully portrays a love that faces struggle, but ends with a happy ending.

This movie features Tom, played by Joseph Gordon who falls in love with Summer, played by Zooey Deschanel. He thinks Summer is the love of his life, but Summer doesn’t believe in love and relationships. This 2013 sci-fi and romance film features Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson. It revolves around Theodore Twombly who is a reserved and introvert writer. Sixteen Candles, a 1984 rom-com directed by John Huges shows the story of Samantha (played by Molly Ringwald). On her sixteenth birthday, Samantha is pretty sad because she gets ignored by her family as they forget her birthday. She also has a crush on a guy named Ted and this movie features how they both end up together.

This movie is directed by Michael Showalter and stars Kumail Nanjiani and Zoe Kazan. Kumail, who is a Pakistani comic meet Emily, a graduate and is smitten by her. They kick start their relationship but face hurdles as they follow different religions. This movie is quite amazing and realistic as it is actually based on the real-life story of Kumail Nanjiani and his wife Emily V. Gordon.

This movie showcases a love story between a man and woman where the latter’s dad disapproves of the other and asks her to break up with him. Relatable, emotional, gut wrenching and a movie that is worth watching again and again.

Featuring Kate Beckinsale as Sara Thomas and John Cusack as Johnathan, this movie is about a beautiful love story between a New Yorker and a British woman. Their love is short lived as they rely on fate to determine their future. After a few years they reunite together and sail off to a journey of love and care. This movie is simple, heartwarming and with a beautiful ending.

Blue Valentine is a movie that is perfectly written, directed, and played. The work done by the actors is extremely beautiful and appreciated. This movie is captivating, emotional and gut wrenching and will take you on a rollercoaster of emotions. It features Ryan Gosling as Dean and Michelle Williams as Cindy whose marriage has numerous hurdles. They fail to stand as they raise their daughter and try to rejuvenate their marriage. This movie is a classic and surely one of the best works of Ryan Gosling.
