An interview is a two-way process where an interviewer and an interviewee are involved. The purpose of an interview is to choose the right person for the right job. With ever-increasing competition, it is imperative to stand out to get selected.

It is essential to be prepared beforehand. It is vital to research the company and job position before going for an interview. One should always prepare answers to frequently asked questions; this will help the person to appear more confident and prepared. 

 Be prepared for questions like :

  • Tell me about yourself
  • What are your strengths and weakness?
  • What are your hobbies?
  • Why should we hire you?
  • Where do you see yourself in the next 5 or 10 years?

2. Arriving Late

Being late is considered the worst mistake. One must reach the destination 15 minutes before the allotted time. This shows how much importance the opportunity holds. It also leaves a positive impact.

3. Appearing Unpolished

We all know that the first impression is the last. Hence the interviewee must be groomed and appropriately dressed. When a person walks into the room, the first thing that anyone notices is your appearance. 

Some essential grooming tips:

  • Wear properly ironed formals 
  • Trim or clean your nails
  • Wear polished shoes
  • Wear less or no jewellery 
  • Wear less or no makeup 
  • Have a proper hairstyle or haircut 
  • Accessories like a tie, a belt are essential.

4. Having A Negative Body Language

It is crucial to have positive body language to crack any interview. Having a smile, maintaining proper eye contact and appearing interested are signs of positive body language. Not smiling, avoiding eye contact, shaking your hands and legs constantly, and appearing too shy or angry can negatively affect the interviewer. Avoid being nervous and be confident instead.

Badmouthing or excessive criticising past or present employer shows a bad attitude. It makes the interviewer feel that the same will be spoken about them in the future if they select you.

6. Making Use Of Your Phone

Texting or calling is considered disrespectful and rude. So, make sure you silence or switch off your phone. If you forget to silence your phone, decline it or receive it only if it is an emergency. Do not forget to apologise to the interviewer for the inconvenience.

We all know how lying is always a bad idea. Truth always finds a way to reveal itself. This increases the chances of disqualification or termination even after getting selected for the job. Similarly, putting false information in your resume is also not a good idea.  

8. Forgetting To Follow Up

Most of the interviewees forget to follow up. Follow-up should be done through emails within 24 hours. It is essential to thank the interviewer for their valuable time. Following up shows that you are interested in the job. If you don’t follow up, there are chances that you might be forgotten among a sea of applicants.

Always keep your answers relevant and short. When asked a personal question, answer only as much as required. Please do not ask the interviewees about their family, friends, partners or pets. If the interviewee asks any personal question that you wish not to answer, then politely decline to answer the question.

10. Not Asking Any Questions

In the end, if the interviewer asks, “Do you have any questions for me ?”. Your answer should not be “not really”, “umm, no”, or “no”. It is vital to have some questions at the end as it shows that you are indeed interested in the job. Remember not to ask questions that are already answered, as it shows that the person did not pay attention. You can beforehand make a list of some questions.

The following questions can be asked to the interviewee:

  • What new skills will I get to learn at the job?
  • What are your expectations from me?
  • Could you let me know the culture of the company?
  • What are the various challenges that I will face in this job?
  • On what metrics will my performance will be evaluated?
  • What training programs are available for the employees?

Giving an interview can be highly nerve-racking, but the above tips will help you ace any interview.
