Prescription drug abuse is at an all-time high in the United States. The most commonly abused class of drugs is pain relievers, and abuse can lead to addiction. Oxycodone, hydromorphone, meperidine, diphenoxylate, and hydrocodone are typically prescribed for pain relief. But tranquilizers, stimulants, and sedatives can also be used.

Pain Pills Vs. Kratom

Pain medication can be an absolute godsend to people with chronic pain disorders or those recovering from surgery or dealing with cancer. When using opioids, pain can be reduced. They slow the transmission of pain signals between the body and the brain.

Even when taken at the prescribed dosage and for legitimate reasons, they can have side effects. Those side effects include nausea, vomiting, anxiety, lightheadedness, itching, mood changes, and constipation. If taken in large amounts or for too long, they can quickly lead to physical dependence and addiction.

Other dangerous side effects of abusing these drugs include;

  • Slowed brain function
  • Depressed breathing
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Hyperthermia
  • Paranoia

There Is A Need For Help Among People

The abuse of prescription drugs is a growing and dangerous health problem. Overdosing on prescription painkillers kills more people every year than cocaine and heroin combined. On the other hand, no one intentionally chooses to become a drug addict. In addition, most people who realize they have a problem are desperate for help.

Rehabilitation centers have sprung up due to the high need. In-patient and outpatient treatment options are run by doctors, hospitals, or clinics. Nonprofits also provide treatment options. Still, others are simply casually formed self-help groups. Most people need this outside help. Going “cold turkey” can be tricky and even dangerous because of the severe withdrawal symptoms caused by pain pills.
