Benefits Of Intermittent Fasting: What Fasting Does To Your Body ?

Benefits of intermittent fasting

Almost every religion in the world promotes fasting as a sacred ritual.

Muslims fast during the month of Ramzaan. Catholics observe abstinence during Lent. Hindus fast on different days of the week all year round.

Have you ever given it a thought as to why would our religion ask us to starve?

Should only the extremely committed, devout, religiously inclined people fast?

Every ritual has a deeper scientific reason behind what needs to be done and how it needs to be done, only for our well-being.

After all, it is said your body is your temple.

So let’s throw some light on what fasting does to your body and benefits of intermittent fasting:

As surprising as it may seem, there are scientific studies claiming that a reduction in calories cures several common ailments. For example, intermittent fasting reduces blood pressure, triglycerides, total & LDL cholesterol. Thus, saving you from a ‘heart attack’.

  1. Fasting also helps to reduce blood sugar levels. High blood sugar equals to insulin resistance and the by-product is dreadful diabetes. Hence, we can conclude that fasting may have a protective effect on diabetes.
  2. During fasting phases, maximum cell repair is possible. When we fast, the body initiates cellular waste removal. This involves cells breaking down & metabolizing dysfunctional cellular protein.
  3. This process is not just anti-ageing, but it also has anti-cancer effects. The cancerous cells die due to lack of supply of nutrients.
  4. The immune system also improves during short periods of fasting; antibodies grow stronger and are more effective against infections and cancerous cells.

  2. When fasting, a person is more ready to relax; during this time, autogenic training or other relaxation techniques are easiest to learn.
  3. Any normal person can go without food or at least reduced calorie intake for a short period. Unlike reduced calorie diet, where a person’s stomach growls all the time, with fasting, the hunger feeling disappears in one or two days and you get accustomed to it.

Please Note! Fasting is only for healthy individuals. It is not meant for very young kids, pregnant women, or breastfeeding mothers. People with any other health condition should first consult their doctor.
