Mala Necklaces For Meditation Use Beads To Add Meaning To Your Life

Mala Necklaces for Meditation

We all are aware of Malas.

Indian tradition has a special place for Malas.

Our ancestors used these mala necklaces for meditation. The Hindus and the Buddhists have used the Mala necklaces as prayer beads for centuries.

These Mala necklaces are extensively used for meditation across the globe.

Fashion has taken over our traditional values in almost all aspects, and Mala Necklaces are no different.

They are now modernized with many variations. But almost always, the base remains the same. Each Mala typically has 108 beads.

There is no basic rule of meditating using a Mala.

However, humans can run without shoes, but always use a pair as it is comfortable and efficient. Similarly, Mala Necklaces are commonly used as a meditation tool.

It is easier to keep track of mantra repetitions using mala necklaces.

How To Use A Mala Necklace For Meditation:

Choose a place which is of fewer distractions and pin drop silence. Sit comfortably.

By holding the mala in your right hand, hang it over your middle finger and keep your thumb and index finger separate.

Start chanting mantras. With each repetition, slide a bead down with your thumb away from you.

Continue doing this with one bead per mantra. Repeat the process until you have gone all the way around your necklace and are back at the start bead- known as the ‘Guru Bead’.

If you want to continue, do not cross the guru bead. Instead, turn it around in the other direction.

According to tradition, certain materials such as gemstones add to the experience. If desired, you can use specific beads for certain purposes. Some  of them are:

  • Amethyst- Peace
  • Garnet- Faith
  • Indian Agate- Protection
  • Rose Quartz- Love
  • Tiger Eye- Luck
  • Turquoise- Friendship

Rosewood is also a common choice for wooden beads. The scent of rosewood has been shown to alleviate headaches, nervous tension, stress, and frigidity.

So what are you waiting for! Grab your Mala necklaces, chant your mantras and bring intention as well as meaning to your life. Feel relaxed, rejuvenated and stress-free!
